How to Grow Closer to God as a New Believer

Grow closer to God

Have you just given your life to Christ and found yourself wondering what to do next?

For many this question is answered by a pastor or family member because they have been associated with a church or their family member has helped them.

But there are people like you possibly that do not have those connections.

You may have given your life to Christ after you read a blog post, or read something that pricked your heart, or watched a TV program where you decided to pray and ask Jesus into your heart and life.

If that is the case, this post is for you.

What do I do After Salvation?

You may ask what do I do after salvation?

There are several things that you should do if you are serious about your new life.

After you receive Christ into your heart, your goal is to live a life that emulates him and grows closer to him.

There are several steps you should take.

Immerse Yourself in the Body of Christ

The first thing to do if you have not attended church is to find a church family.

The Bible tells us we should meet and worship together.

Attending church and spending time with other Christians helps you to grow.

It also helps you and others to be encouraged by one another’s testimony.

You will find that many times you may need someone to talk to or to pray with you and for you.

Attending church helps you to grow in listening to the word in a Sunday School class and the pastor’s teaching.

Attend weekly Sunday services and mid-week services if you can.

What better way than to become part of a church family and part of the body of Christ than to immerse yourself right away?

Be Baptized

Next, you will want to be baptized.

It was God’s wish that after we become a new creature in him that we make a public declaration following Christ’s example.

Although Christ was blameless and without sin, he was baptized by John the Baptist to set an example for those who decided to follow him.

Baptism for Christ represented his death, burial, and resurrection.

For you, as a new believer, you should follow Christ’s example and be baptized.

When you are baptized you will be fully immersed in water and this represents the death and burial of the old person and the resurrection of the new person in Christ that you have now become.

Go to your pastor and let him or her know you have received Christ in your heart and life, and you want to be baptized.

Develop a Daily Prayer Life

Next, you will want to begin to develop a daily prayer life.

You will want to seek God daily.

Commune with him.

You can talk to God as if he is a friend sitting right next to you.

He loves and cares for you. He wants to be there for you.

God wants us to share our day with him.

He wants us to thank him for all he has done for us and he wants us to ask him for the things we need or to call upon him when we are in need.

The Bible says, “Cast all your cares upon him.” (I Peter 5:7)

No matter what you face, he is always there.

And the word tells us to “come boldly before the throne…to find help in the time of need.” (Hebrew 4:16)

God is our strength and our provider.

Study the Word of God

Next, you will want to begin to study the word.

You must begin to study the word and understand it. Ask God to help you.

There are many plans out there that you could follow as a new believer.

In fact, I am working on some that I hope to have posted soon.

If you do not already have a Bible, you will want to get one that you will use.

For a few examples, you can go to my resource page and read about the different ones I have used that I really enjoy.

Memorize and Meditate on the Word

You will want to begin meditating and memorizing the word.

The Bible says to “hide thy word in my heart that I might not sin against thee.” (Psalms 119:11)

You cannot meditate on something that you do not know or read. And you certainly cannot memorize something you do not study.

The Bible tells us “Study to show thyself approved.” (II Timothy 2:15)

As a new believer, you have entered a spiritual battle that has been ongoing for thousands of years. You will need to put on your armor and be ready to fight.

It is important to get the word deep into your heart and mind so that you can seek solace in the word when temptations or trials come your way.

Find a Mentor

Next, you may want to find a mentor.

A mentor could be a friend, family member, or someone who has been a Christian for a long time and can help you to grow in your walk with Christ.

You may decide to talk to a pastor or teacher from the church and they could become your mentor or direct you to someone who may be willing to be a mentor.

Once you are born again, you may begin to experience trials, hardships, or possibly things that you never experienced before.

You will want the knowledge and guidance to help fight the enemy.

Change the Music You Listen To

Most people listen to various types of music, myself included.

There are a lot of different genres of music and a lot of the music is nice to listen to but there are some genres and artists that just do not edify God.

If you are listening to music that is not edifying to the Lord, you may want to adjust what you are listening to.

I always told my kids, what you put in is what comes out. Even the Bible tells us that “for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” (Luke 6:45)

Try listening to Christian music. It is upbeat and uplifting.

Just because you are a new believer does not mean you have to completely stop listening to other types of music but try listening to some Christian music and see what a difference it makes in your attitude and how your day just seems to be better.

If you have not listened to Christian music before, try a 30-day challenge.

You may really enjoy something new.

Becoming a Christian or new believer is refreshing. You are a new person.

It is exciting because the blood of Christ has cleansed you from the sin of this world.

The things listed here are not exhaustive lists but things that you should do to begin growing closer to God.

If we are not growing, we become stagnant.

The last thing you want to do as a new believer is to lose that excitement in your new faith.

I hope these things help you and you will take each new day in your new life, slow and steady.

Dedicate yourself to learning all that you can and grow closer to God as you do so.

You will be blessed.
